Electrical Soft-Start is a feature on many Delco Remy starters that reduces wear by slowing the initial rotation of the pinion. Instead of slamming the pinion into the flywheel, the starter slowly rotates until the pinion meshes properly with the ring gear, then engages fully to crank the engine.
Advantages of Soft-Start Engagement
- Minimizes tooth abutment and gear clash, preventing broken or worn flywheel teeth
- Reduces current draw and stress on the starter motor during engagement, extending starter life
- Provides smoother engine starts and reduces noise compared to conventional positive-shift starters
