Difference between Delco Remy CORELESS Reman and normal Reman Starter motor

What is a normal 39MT starter?

The Delco Remy 39MT is a heavy-duty gear-reduction starter used in trucks, buses, off-highway equipment, and heavy engines. Delco Remy describes the 39MT as suitable for heavy-duty truck and off-highway applications, with features such as gear reduction, soft-start pinion engagement, sealed solenoid design, and sealed/no-nose configurations to reduce contamination and maintenance.

A 39MT can be sold in different commercial forms:

Type

Meaning

New 39MT

Brand-new starter, usually highest price, no reman history.

39MT Reman

Factory remanufactured starter, normally sold with a core charge/core return process.

39MT CORELESS Reman

Factory remanufactured starter, but sold without core charge and without core return requirement.

Difference between 39MT CORELESS Reman and normal 39MT Reman

The main difference is commercial/logistics, not necessarily technical performance.

Delco Remy’s own program explanation says coreless reman options provide no core charge, no core handling/tracking, same quality and design as Delco Remy Genuine Products, and a low-cost replacement alternative.

Benefits of CORELESS over normal reman starter

The benefits are mostly practical:

1. No core charge
The customer does not pay an extra refundable core deposit. This improves cash flow and simplifies billing.

2. No need to return old starter
The buyer does not have to send back the failed/old starter to the seller, distributor, or Delco Remy core system.

3. No risk of core rejection
With a normal reman sale, the returned core may need to meet acceptance standards. Delco Remy states that cores should be assembled, not corroded, and should be Delco Remy starter or alternator cores to receive proper credit.   With coreless, this issue does not arise.

4. Easier for remote customers and field repairs
For mining, construction, fleet, and off-highway customers, returning the failed unit can be inconvenient. Coreless is useful where the failed starter is unavailable, damaged, lost, non-Delco, or difficult to retrieve.

5. Same reman value proposition
The customer still gets the cost advantage of a remanufactured Delco Remy starter instead of paying for a new unit.

Is CORELESS technically better than a normal 39MT?

Not automatically.

A CORELESS 39MT Reman is not “coreless” because the starter has no internal core/armature. The word coreless refers to the sales/core-return program. It does not mean the motor is a special coreless electric-motor design.

So, compared with a normal 39MT reman of the same specification, the coreless version is generally not chosen because it gives more torque, more cranking speed, or longer life. It is chosen because it avoids the core-return process.

Should one choose CORELESS or not?

Choose a 39MT CORELESS Reman when:

  • The customer does not have an old starter to return.
  • The old starter is badly damaged, incomplete, corroded, or not acceptable as a core.
  • The customer wants a simple purchase with no core deposit.
  • The cost difference versus normal reman plus core handling is acceptable.
  • The job is urgent and paperwork/logistics should be minimized.

Choose a normal 39MT Reman with core return when:

  • The customer has a proper acceptable Delco Remy core.
  • The customer can return the core easily.
  • The net price after core credit is lower than the coreless option.
  • The distributor/customer already has a smooth core-return process.

Choose a new 39MT when:

  • The application is critical and the customer specifically wants new service stock.
  • Warranty/commercial preference requires a new unit.
  • The price difference is acceptable.
  • The exact application requires a specific new-service part number.

Customer obligations when buying a CORELESS Delco Remy reman starter

For a CORELESS Reman starter, the customer’s key advantage is that there is no core obligation. They generally do not need to:

  • Return the old starter.
  • Pay a core deposit.
  • Track core paperwork.
  • Worry about core acceptance or rejection.

However, the customer still has normal purchase and warranty obligations:

  1. Select the correct part number
The customer must match voltage, mount type, pinion teeth, pitch, rotation, solenoid position, polarity, OCP/IMS requirements, and engine/ring gear application. Delco Remy listings sometimes warn that incorrect application can damage the unit; for example, some 39MT part numbers are restricted to specific DD13/DD15/DD16 engine/ring gear combinations.
  2. Install correctly
Correct mounting, wiring, battery condition, cable condition, grounding, and torqueing are essential. Some Delco Remy 39MT replacement listings also mention mounting-hole differences and recommend hardened washers where applicable.
  3. Do not misuse the starter
Over-cranking, low voltage, poor cables, weak batteries, wrong wiring, or repeated extended cranking can damage any starter. Some 39MT models include OCP/over-crank protection, but it is still not a substitute for correcting the root cause of hard starting.
  4. Preserve invoice and warranty documents
Even though there is no core return, warranty claims usually require proof of purchase, correct application, and evidence that the failure was not caused by installation or vehicle-side defects.

A 39MT CORELESS Reman Delco Remy Starter is best described as:

A genuine Delco Remy remanufactured 39MT heavy-duty starter supplied without any core charge or core return requirement. It gives the customer the value of a remanufactured Delco Remy starter while eliminating the hassle of returning the old unit, core paperwork, core rejection risk, and extra refundable deposit.
